Chichibu Shrine
秩父神社
Serving as the principal shrine of the Chichibu region, this sacred site has drawn the devoted faith of locals since ancient times. The current main hall was donated by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1592 and is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Saitama Prefecture.
Nagatoro Iwadatami Rocks
長瀞岩畳
This scenic spot along the Arakawa River features vast expanses of flat rock terraces resembling tatami mats. Formed deep underground under intense pressure, these rocks are crystalline schist. The entire area is designated as a national Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument, often celebrated as the "cradle of Japanese geology."
Mitsumine Shrine
三峯神社
Perched deep in the mountains of Chichibu at an elevation of roughly 1,100 meters, this sacred shrine is tied to the legend of Yamato Takeru no Mikoto. Because mountain wolves have long been revered here as divine messengers known as "Oinusama," you'll be greeted throughout the grounds by statues of wolves instead of the usual guardian lions.
Food
Waraji Katsudon
わらじかつ丼
This is a specialty dish from the Chichibu region. Large, thin pork cutlets shaped like waraji (traditional woven straw sandals) are dipped in a sweet and savory soy-based sauce and served over a bed of rice. Leaving the cutlets uncovered by egg is the authentic Chichibu style.
Miso Potato
みそポテト
A beloved local snack from Chichibu, Miso Potato (みそポテト) features steamed potatoes coated in batter, deep-fried until crisp, and drizzled with a sweet miso glaze. Crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside, the savory, rich aroma of the miso will keep you coming back for more.
Chichibu Soba
秩父のそば
Surrounded by mountains, Chichibu is home to many soba noodle shops. If you want to fully enjoy the aroma of buckwheat flour and the smooth texture as it goes down, cold zaru soba (ざるそば) is highly recommended.
Souvenirs
Chichibu Meisen Silk
秩父銘仙
Chichibu Meisen is a traditional silk textile that flourished in Chichibu from the Meiji period through the Showa period. Crafted using a distinctive dyeing technique called hogushi-nassen (ほぐし捺染), where the warp threads are printed with patterns before weaving, it is famous for its vibrant, reversible designs appearing equally on both the front and back. In 2013, it was designated as a national traditional craft.
